The Chief Program and Services Office (CPSO) oversees five divisions administering client services to more than 7 million Texans, including programs serving women, children, families, older adults, people with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and people with behavioral health needs. CPSO also oversees the Health and Specialty Care System, the state’s network of state supported living centers and state mental health hospitals. CPSO advances the HHSC mission to serve Texans by ensuring coordinated, efficient, and accountable delivery of essential programs and services.
Job Description:
The CPSO Program Specialist Intern will assist with planning, developing, and implementing program activities in accordance with program objectives and goals, including researching, collecting and analyzing program and policy issues and initiatives. Collecting data may involve communicating with HHS staff and staff from other agencies and organizations. The CPSO Program Specialist Intern may also prepare written documents or presentations that summarize their research findings. The CPSO Program Specialist Intern works under general supervision, with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Learning Objectives:
-Gain understanding of HHSC and the Chief Program and Services Office.
-Increase their knowledge of specific HHSC programs, including how they are funded, related state and federal policies, and the programs' eligibility criteria.
-The intern will use their knowledge to analyze how certain federal health and human services programs are implemented in Texas and in other states to identify potential best practices.
Possible internship projects include, but are not limited to:
-Complete a landscape scan of other states' Medicaid, SNAP and TANF notices to identify best practices for communicating eligibility information to clients.
-Research other state's Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) to identify best practices, how other states measure the effectiveness of their AAAs, and how other states fund their AAAs.
By the end of the internship, the intern will develop a written summary of their research findings and analysis. They may present their findings during a briefing with the Chief Program and Services Officer.
Required Skills:
-Excellent written and verbal communication. Skill with Microsoft Office suite.
Initial Selection Criteria:
-Completed at least 60 hours of university-level coursework.
-Preferred Major: Human Services, Public Policy, Public Health, Public Administration, or a related field.
